The recent TV programme 'Cracking Up' featured a conversation between Alistair Campbell, former Labour Press Secretary, and myself about a break down he had in 1986. It was part of the BBC's 'Headroom' Season which aims to improve pulic awareness ofmental health issues.

Alistair Campbell has always claimed that his breakdown, although painful, was the best thing that ever happened to him. For a sample of my  interview with him click here! Or you can watch the whole programme on iplayer.

I am the author of a uniquely positive take on depression called 'How Sadness Survived' which explores the upside of being depressed and how we can respond to depression positively.

It's available on Amazon UK, Amazon.com and Amazon.ca and Waterstones Bookstores throughout the UK. It has been translated in to 15 different languages.

How Sadness Survived has been generally well received by ex-sufferers. Please see testamonials and endorsements below.

"An important and novel analysis of the possible advantages of having a depression." - Lewis Wolpert CBE, author of 'Malignant Sadness'.

"Keedwell's book is remarkable for its profound respect for the subtlety of our experience of depression. Until recently stigma and discrimination has made it difficult to talk frankly about what it feels like to be depressed, and to look with clarity at what insights and benefits we may gain from it. He argues convincingly from the new science Evolutionary Psychology that there must be some significant evolutionary advantage to depression (as well as the obvious costs)"  - Jonathan Naess , founder of anti-stigma charity Stand to Reason.

'How Sadness Survived' is a radical take on a common, ancient and universal human condition with implications for treatment. To order in the UK visit Amazon.co.uk or Radcliffe publishers. Available in US on Amazon.com. and Canada  on Amazon.ca.
